British book store giant to enter Denmark
08-05-2008
Regional setup:
The book store chain WHSmith is to sell non-expensive books in five new stores at Copenhagen International Airport.
From autumn 2008, passengers at Copenhagen International Airport will have a new selection of reading matter to take on their travels. The British book store chain WHSmith, which has a strong position on the UK market, is to operate five new stores in the airport in collaboration with the present operator SSP.
"With WHSmith's entry, we welcome a leading international operator which is not currently present on the Danish market," says Henrik Busch, Vice President for Commercial Business, Copenhagen Airports A/S. "With its over 215 years of experience within the retail sector, WHSmith's brand can contribute to an expanded global understanding for international travellers."
The book stores at Copenhagen International Airport are part of WHSmith's new strategy. The company is known for its stores at traffic junctions, but after a down year for its high street stores WHSmith is now reverting to its core business: confectionary, books and beverages. Here sales increased by 1.8 per cent to £ 734 million last year in a market which saw sales in general decrease compared with 2006, writes Børsen Business Daily.
