In Copenhagen and the greater Copenhagen Area, a high degree of
specialisation is taking place, notably within pharmaceuticals,
chemicals, biotech and IT and telecommunications. This
development is creating regional centres of competence and provides
the basis for an extended infrastructure of knowledge that is
attractive to investors.
Research institutions and universities support the
infrastructure of these clusters and today, the region is home to
many innovative environments with several science parks and
technological institutions.
In the Øresund Region, business and research communities have
joined forces and have established active cross border networks
that provide the basis for business dialogue and transactions as
well as the opportunity to recruit skilled staff.
Biotechnology and Pharmaceuticals
Copenhagen is located in the centre of the cross-border
pharmaceutical and biotech cluster Medicon Valley. Medicon Valley
is Scandinavia’s largest pharmaceutical cluster in terms of
research, employment, output and export of pharmaceutical products.
The region boasts world-class academic research in a range of
commercially attractive therapeutic areas and the region holds high
quality and capacity for clinical research and trials. 36,000
people are employed within the pharmaceutical sector and the
Medicon Valley Academy with more than 200 member companies has been
established to promote a closer co-operation between industry,

The Øresund Region hosts one of the most advanced IT clusters in
northern Europe, with more than 100,000 employees and almost 500
ICT researchers. Advanced R&D expertise, a highly skilled
workforce and the availability of venture capital have played a
major role in the generation of a dynamic growth area. The region
is a breeding ground for innovative technologies in areas such as
wireless technologies, micro and nanotechnologies, photonics and
